 Briefly describe your organisation
The Vienna, Austria based company Matrixware Information Services GmbH was founded in 2005 and is active in the field of patent retrieval, a subarea of information retrieval (IR). IR falls under the heading of information science and informatics and uses computer-assisted methods to conduct content-based information searches.

With its more than 70 employees - a team of expert software developers, computer engineers, mathematicians, linguists and patent information domain specialists - Matrixware provides the users of patent information worldwide with innovative solutions. The companys aim is to use recent scientific findings in natural language processing (NLP) to sustain the increasing workload and accessibility needs in the Intellectual Property Information community.

According to a pilot study conducted in conjunction with the European Patent Office (EPO), relying on automation can dramatically increase the throughput of business processes dependent on patent information. Matrixware received funding from the Austrian Federal Ministry of Science for its innovative work in improving patent retrieval tools with cutting edge NLP technologies.

Natural language processing
Matrixware applications process data by its meaning in its concrete context to turn it into information, which helps to raise productivity and opens up new business opportunities in the field of intellectual property information.

Usability and Information Interfacing
Matrixware also focuses on the user interface design of its applications, because only information that reaches the user can become knowledge and therefore useable in a professional context.

Quality Management through automation
Matrixware uses NLP technology to support the user in fulfilling his information need, but uses it also internally to substantially increase the data quality of its patent database.
