 Central aim of organisation
The IRF is an open IR science institution, managed by leading international experts.

 Briefly describe your organisation
The Information Retrieval Facility (IRF) is a young and dynamically growing research institute founded in 2006.

The institution is managed by leading international experts in the field who ensure the
highest quality in the research supported.

Like no other facility in the world, the IRF provides a powerful supercomputing infrastructure
that is exclusively concerned with semantic processing of text. It has at its heart a huge
collection of documents representing the global archive of ideas and inventions in an
environment, which allows large-scale scientific experiments on ways to manage and
retrieve this knowledge.

This enormous collection of real data allows IR researchers from all over the world to
experiment for the first time on a realistic data corpus. The quality of search results is
reviewed and evaluated in many fields but especially those specialising in patent search.

 RTD Experience
In the short term, the IRF has chosen patent data as the basis to build a reference system because of their specifics in terms of complexity, volume and strategic importance, as well as the particular needs of patent searchers (high recall).

The IRF has launched two evaluation tracks dedicated to Intellectual Property within the two major international evaluation workshops in the USA and Europe: TREC-CHEM (Chemistry track) and CLEF-IP (Intellectual Property track).

Currently, the IRF is engaged in the following research activities, together with leading universities like Sheffield, UMass Amherst, Glasgow, Radboud Nijmegen, Queen Mary University of London and other academic partners like Fondazione Ugo Bordoni:

Data Representation

* Semantic annotation
* Detection of OCR quality on patents
* Text mining for intellectual property
* Gate Teamware

Visualisation of search results

* Charting search in the patent space

Next generation search

* Service Detective
* Large scale logical retrieval
* Searching for prior-art patents
* LarKC - The Large Knowledge Collider

Patent search

* Distributed extension of the IR platform TERRIER
* Developing IR and filtering applications using FPGAs and MITRION-C
* LEMUR/INDRI for the supercomputing platform ALTIX
